Summer Reading Assignments 2020-2021
Dear Students:
Congratulations!!! You are enrolled in AP English Language and Composition. This is a college level course approved by the College Board that will also give you the opportunity to take the AP English Language and Composition exam in May of 2021 to be eligible for college credit. To prepare you for the rigor of the reading and writing required for AP tests, college entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT, and your future college courses, reading assignments are required during the summer and throughout the year. Please visit my website for more information about the course: https://evansaplang.weebly.com/
You will be required to read a total of three selections (novels/plays from the lists below) beginning with A Mercy by Toni Morrison and Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. You will then choose one from the list provided below. Be prepared for reading check tests and writing assignments for each one that you choose. Please be aware that reading online summaries and critiques of the works could lead to plagiarism if you use any insights other than your own in your writing assignments. It is a good idea to take detailed notes as you read each work (character relationships, themes, significant plot points and quotations etc.)
Reading List: (total of THREE works – unabridged – no adapted versions)
- Book #1: You must read A Mercy by Toni Morrison.

What do we do in AP Language?
In this course, we will explore how rhetoric affects, impacts, and persuades audiences through critical inquiry and analyses of a variety of genres! We will engage in extensive readings and partnered, group, and whole class discussions to reach our interpretations. The course is paired with American Literature, so while we move through the chronological timeline of America's story, we will also be analyzing some more contemporary texts that thematically connect with our units.
